It may not have The Big Bazoinga masterpiece style of humor. But more often than not, I can be my own laugh track. And what’s a funny show without funny characters? (besides trash television) So we’ve already ranked some of the funniest anime series out there. But let’s go over the chuckle kings and queens of anime as we count down the absolute funniest anime characters out there.
25. Rudeus Greyrat
Anime: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation This show was way funnier than I thought it would have been, and it’s largely thanks to how Rudeus was written. Since he’s a fully grown pervert in a little boy’s body (boy does that sound wrong), we get a lot of panty shenanigans. But that’s far from his best trick. Being that he spent most of his previous life on the Internet, the guy has quite the sharp tongue and constantly makes jabs at people. Granted he usually doesn’t have the courage to say it out loud… Honestly, all of the Grayrats have busted my gut a few times.
24. Aoi Toudou
Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen At first, I thought Toudou’s comedic mark was going to completely miss. And I thought he was just going to be some buff guy douche. But when he had that made up flashback just because Itadori liked the same type of women, I knew I had struck gold. The guy is straight delusional, but it’s played off in such a charming way that it never gets old. Itadori playing along because they had one bromance moment in the midst of a fight is just the icing on the cake.
23. Nozomu Itoshiki
Anime: Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei When it comes to dark humor, Nozomu is the champ. This is because this dude sees life itself as a very cruel joke, and will somehow see the worst in any possible situation. But even though his perception is so bleak, he’s just full of energy. This combo leads to some pretty ridiculous and hilarious scenes where he basically tries to speed-run suicide, or goes on a tangent so wild and ridiculous that you just can’t help but laugh. And his refusal to finally settle down gets plenty of relatability points from me.
22. Maeda
Anime: Asobi Asobase Just like the previous pick, Maeda is definitely an acquired taste. Asobi Asobase is the hyperactive, over the top neighbor’s kid of the comedy anime genre. And this man is at its pinnacle. He’s Hanako’s butler, and he has the uncanny ability to consistently appear out of thin air and misunderstand everything. Luckily, he also has a laser cannon in his bum. On second thought, I can’t really say that it was a hit of luck, but it definitely made for some absurd jokes.
21. Chrome
Anime: Dr. Stone Chrome is both a genius and a dumbass. And again, relatability is highly praised here. After spending most of his life convinced that he’s the next Harry Potter, Chrome has worked up quite the prideful attitude. This leads him to make a fool out of himself. Whether it’s through his initial antics when he’s trying to impress Senku, or his later dependable but flamboyant approach to any and every problem. This stone-aged wizard definitely made the show a lot funnier with his presence. Also, an honorable mention for Kaseki, the grandad bod king, and Ginrou, the average Redditor.
20. Iori Kitahara
Anime: Grand Blue Everyone in this show is a bit unhinged. But the man that turns this insanity into comedy is without a doubt Iori. He’s like the ultimate reaction channel. While everyone is just doing their thing, playing naked rock paper scissors and testing the alcohol poisoning mortality rates, Iori serves like a voice of reason that pokes fun at all of that. Don’t get me wrong, he also does the same stupid stuff. But it’s his awareness of how truly stupid it is that makes this show one of my favorite anime comedies.
19. Zenitsu Agatsuma
Anime: Demon Slayer I’ll admit that Zenitsu is a pretty ridiculous character. So you honestly either love him or hate him. In case you couldn’t tell, I love the zappy coward. There’s something so brilliant about a dude who can pull off the sickest one-shot kill move, and then immediately convince himself that he’s weaker than a five-year-old child. And even though the jokes might seem repetitive, it somehow got me every time. Add in the literal personification of chaotic energy called Inosuke and you just get one funny moment after the next, even though the show can get quite dark.
18. Rak Wraithraiser
Anime: Tower of God I love Rak for a very similar reason to Chrome – the dude is simultaneously so brilliant and stupid that it cracks me up. Even the little things, like the fact that he insists that everyone is a turtle, never fail to put a smile on my face. Then add in the more absurd moments like when he tried to solve a puzzle, or when he literally became a chibi character, and you get a pretty hilarious dude. The fact that he physically looks cool and intimidating only adds to the comedy factor in my book.
17. Sasha Blouse
Anime: Attack on Titan Attack on Titan is straight-up depressing sometimes, with all the death and betrayal floating in the air. So having even a ray of sunshine goes a long way. This task mostly falls onto Sasha, as her endless hunger has made for some quite ridiculous moments, most notably the potato incident at boot camp. And since she’s a minor character, you can always bet that she’s going to do something over the top and funny when the focus is actually on her.
16. Ristarte
Anime: Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious Go ahead, call her a Bing/Wish Aqua, my devotion to her will still not falter. In a lot of ways, Ristarte is just a waking prideful hormone that’s unlucky enough to fall for a man with the personality of a brick wall. And it is brilliant. The way she constantly gets flustered and states everything that’s on her mind, which is usually perverted, makes for stellar gags. She can barely even get inside of the friendzone, let alone the bedroom. Plus, she’s the only character that I know of that exemplified why flying at high speeds is a catastrophe to any lady’s image.
15. Inko
Anime: Toradora! I really need to include Inko in this list simply because she’s the only mascot-esque character that has ever managed to make me consistently laugh. From the fact that her name is literally just “parakeet” in Japanese, to her inability to say her simple name even though she can say other very complex words… It’s all just brilliant. She constantly looks like she’s on the verge of death, and yet she also looks oddly goofy and cheerful. I love this bird, I want this bird, she has to be on this list.
14. Koro-Sensei
Anime: Assassination Classroom You would be pressed to find a character as goofy and lovable as Koro-Sensei, which is extremely ironic considering his backstory. He constantly has a smirk on his face, and his visual design just allows for some top-notch gags. Be it when he’s sent to horny jail, or when he becomes depressed over some minor inconvenience, this yellow Moon-shattering squid man is one of the most relatable characters in all of anime. So if you’re looking for some cheerful humor and an ending that’ll give and cure your depression, Assassination Classroom is the way to go.
13. Saitama
Anime: One Punch Man The thing that makes Saitama so funny is the fact that he’s not funny. The dude is never really trying to be cheeky or entertaining. In fact, he looks bored out of his mind in almost every scene. But this is exactly what makes him so hilarious. He’s beyond overpowered, so he’s never really forced to change his demeanor, leading him to take out national threats while worrying about upcoming bills. I would also like to give an honorable mention to Mumen Rider, simply because his fight with the Deep Sea King made me fall out of my chair.
12. Riki Nendou
Anime: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. This anime is overall just hilarious, with nearly every character having a schtick worthy of this list. But Nendou is by far my favorite. Having a character be very dumb to get out a few laughs is as cliché as you can get in comedy. But Nendou has perfected that form. He’s so believably and yet extraordinarily stupid that I can never see any of his jokes coming. To this day I still remember the tears I shed when he calmly claimed that airplane turbulence was caused by an earthquake.
11. Arataka Reigen
Anime: Mob Psycho 100 I feel like I should dislike Reigen, at least a little bit. But I just can’t bring myself to do it. He’s a conman. The type that would probably sell their own grandmother for a quick buck. And yet he’s so likable. Maybe it’s just because of how dramatic he tends to get or the visual gags that usually have him in the center. Nut the dude is just hilarious. And after watching the finale of season one, I realized that if Reigen was the overpowered protagonist instead of Mob, this show would lose all of its footing when it comes to telling a serious story. It would have just been a banger comedy.
10. Amatsuyu Kisaragi
Anime: ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me? This might just be because r/niceguys cracks me up, but I found Kisaragi hilarious. Because he’s quite literally the personification of that subreddit. He keeps trying to play the part of the naïve high school boy in the hopes of getting his own harem. But every time, Bench-kun appears from the shadows and ruins his day. He’s far from a good person and he’s not trying to be funny. But his backwards nature just kills me.
9. Shinra Kishitani
Anime: Durarara!! I love Shinra for all the opposite reasons of my previous pick, as the dude is just wholesome as hell. Sure, he’s an underground doctor and did have that one giant selfish lie. But his love for Celty is such a big part of his personality that you just can’t see him as a bad guy. And it’s when he interacts with Celty that I have the most fun, as he just goes along with whatever happens. “I went in for a kiss but ended up trapped in a ball of darkness. Mondays, am I right?” That type of humor is right up my alley.
8. Jiraiya
Anime: Naruto How could we leave out the Pervy Sage? Although he’s one of the most powerful characters in the series, Jiraiya has scarcely ever been serious. Like a true sage, he has ascended normal human cravings, but then got right back down and maxed out his lust stat. The man just wants to do research for his book, by looking at naked women of course, and only occasionally tutors ninja that later become literal gods of their village. It’s just very difficult not to love this goofy old badass and his antics.
7. Yato
Anime: Noragami Yato just feels like your incredibly funny best friend from high school. He’s constantly getting up to something, because temples don’t pay for themselves. And he seems to always be in high spirits. Sure, he occasionally has a badass moment that makes my jaw drop. But more often than not, he’s just a goofy little guy who wants to be loved. He feels like a mix of Reigen, Shinra and Zenitsu, which is why he outranks all of them. Also because I would totally subscribe to his faith, but that’s beyond the point.
6. Shirou Ashiya
Anime: The Devil is a Part-Timer! Even though Sadao is the titular Devil Part-Timer, it was actually his right-hand man Shirou that had me rolling on the floor laughing. As the king’s advisor, Shirou constantly tires to act professional and does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to the survival of the two. But in the modern world that just means becoming a stay-at-home wife. And I absolutely loved it. Whenever he started nagging about bills or his workload, the bromance just became a little more cannon – and a lot more funny.
5. Joseph Joestar
Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Joseph might not have been the most badass Joestar, or even the most powerful Joestar. But I’ll be damned if he wasn’t the funniest. The absurdity of this man never failed to entertain, be it his brilliant female disguise coupled with Tequila riffles, or the fact that he was late to his own funeral. The man is simply a legend. Even as an old man in Part 3, Joseph just keeps hitting the mark over and over again.
4. Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent
Anime: Baccano! It feels wrong separating these two, so we’re just going to view them as the dynamic duo that they are. Hands-down this is my favorite couple in all of anime. And any scene they’re a part of physically cannot leave me indifferent. They have a very cartoony nature to them and always seem to be going on whacky adventures that just happen to also break the law. In fact, they’re so cheerful and funny that I frequently forget that they’re criminals. Heck, I think even the people they rob forget about it.
3. Mako Mankanshoku
Anime: Kill la Kill Mako is probably the only character on this list that can make me laugh with no set up whatsoever. She doesn’t need another character, a specific scene, or even for something to happen. She could make me laugh while watching paint dry, most likely. This is because she’s a one woman show. And everything that comes out of her mouth feels like a performance. From her needless visuals to her 2 hour ramblings, Mako is constantly on about something. And I love it. She’s like an energy drink in the morning.
2. Kazuma Satou
Anime: KonoSuba I would be hard-pressed to think of a more realistic protagonist than Kazuma. Not because he’s super complex and meticulously crafted, but rather because he’s so perfectly petty and ill-tempered that I fire at least 10 “same” stamps every minute he’s on screen. And that’s what makes him so hilarious. He doesn’t find it beneath him to sucker-punch someone who’s being a douche. And his capability to complain about everything and anything is truly admirable. But it’s his angry freakouts that get me the most, as they’re just comedy gold.
1. Gintoki Sakata
Anime: Gintama It only makes sense that the father of all comedy anime is at number one on this list as well. This man’s facial expressions alone would land him a spot on this list, as I truly believe that there’s no human emotion that cannot be conveyed through Gintoki pics. In terms of attitude, he’s very similar to Kazuma, as he just doesn’t give a damn about looking like the perfect hero or anything like that. He’s lazy, petty, stupid, and worrisomely obsessed with strawberry milk. Plus, he breaks the fourth wall like every other episode. So he can make fun of everything and anything – it’s all on the table.
